The “Liberty” Bell

By Roberta Lea

Verse 1 Am D G Em

Ding dong

Is that freedom in the distance I hear

Sing song

I thought I heard it but it’s not very clear

Too long

It takes to travel to the least of these

To people like me

Verse 2

Bang bang

Goes the bullet all over the world

Shame shame

How the rich will use the poor boys and girls

Gang gang

Were they fighting for the least of these

For people like me

Chorus

All this time, all this time

You were fighting for your freedom

All this time, all this time

You were fighting for your freedom

But never for mine

A few years ago we took the kids

To visit one of our favorite cities

Philly, to kick it with the family

And while we were there

We stopped to visit a bell called

Liberty

And as I studied her, the irony

Wasn’t lost on me

She represented a dominion that was supposed to free

But after she rang she broke

And that symbol of freedom would never ring true

Again

Rang a silent bell

One that could never be broken
